Very few of the remarkable supercharged Cord 812s have survived the past seven decades as well as the lovely, genuine Phaeton presented here.
As is evident from its crisp and well-detailed presentation, this 812 S/C was the subject of a high-quality restoration, reportedly performed by leading Auburn and Cord specialist Stan Gillian of Wellington, Kansas. Judging by its precise panel fit, resplendent ivory paintwork and authentically executed interior, it appears as though no detail was spared in the preparation of this glorious open Cord and there a reassuring evidence of quality in its presentation. The lively ivory over red combination with a striking black canvas soft top, complete with contrasting red piping, is a refreshing color combination for the bold design and captures some of the 812’s finer subtleties. An enviable 99.5-point result during competitive CCCA Grand Classic judging in 2004 is a strong statement towards its outstanding condition is.
In 2006, this sensational Cord joined one of the country’s premier collections – one with a particular emphasis on significant automobile designs and striking one-offs. The aviation inspired instrument panel, streamline moderne features and unmistakable front-end treatment will surely appeal to the collector with an interest in design. Of all the attempts made by American manufacturers during the 1930s, the “coffin nose” Cord is arguably the most influential and successful in its integration of modern styling themes.
Over the past four years this handsome Phaeton has been lavished with attention and its condition is such that it appears poised to successfully compete at shows across the country requiring little more than a thorough detailing. More importantly, it is reported that this car is a certified matching-numbers example and all the components, including the chassis, body, supercharger and running gear, appear to be original Cord items appropriate for this car.
Of the 610 convertible Phaetons ever produced, fewer than 200 were equipped from new with the desirable centrifugal supercharger – a feature that transforms the Cord from a spectacular showpiece into a bona fide, high-performance four-place touring car that, when carefully sorted, is capable of cruising at modern highway speeds with relative comfort, safety and reliability.
The open Cord 810s and 812s are among the most popular and collectible of all American classics, as their utterly unique design, remarkable engineering and incomparable modern style appeal to a wide variety of collectors and tastes. The rare supercharged Phaetons and Sportsmans will continue to remain the most sought after examples given their rarity, performance and intrigue.
In light of its condition, memorable appearance and verified authenticity, the Phaeton offered here is an outstanding representative of the famous supercharged Cord and should prove to be an astute choice for collectors who have always yearned for one of these unique automobiles.
