Description

1991 Oldsmobile Toronado

ITALIAN DESIGN TROFÉO. A space-age concept car that became a reality in production. When is the last time you saw tail lights like this?

FINAL PRODUCTION RUN. ONE-OF-ONE. JUST LIKE IT ROLLED OFF THE FACTORY FLOOR. More Photos than you can imagine...

PEARL, PEARL, PEARL. Check out the new close-ups showing the original pearl paint glistening in the sun. And check out the gorgeous WHITE piping in the interior. If you are fussy, this one's for you!

THIS IS NOT YOUR DADDY'S OLDSMOBILE.

Alan Sidorov, an experienced automobile racer, product tester and freelance write recently said, "An uncomfortable seat will make every long drive miserable."  Not here.  This one is GRAND TOURING all the way with seat comfort and creature comforts galore! The best in Interstate and Autobahn travel.

Why show the rear end of a car as the primary photo?  1st Answer: GM did (see original GM ad in photo gallery.)  2nd Answer: When is the last time you saw this kind of style without it being custom built? The back end of this Italian designed beauty is as unique as the rest of the creative design.  Read on...

Cadillac Eldorado in disguise?

Really? An Oldsmobile Toronado Troféo? Your asking, what does that have to do with Cadillac and what kind of car is this!  In short, the 4th Generation Toronado is an Eldorado in disguise, with CORVETTE-bred suspension.  Dating back to the 1960's, the Toronado introduced the first-ever front-wheel-drive in a production car. In addition, the Oldsmobile model line offered the world's first turbocharged production automobile, the 1962 F-85 Jetfire V-8. Yes, it arrived just ahead of the Chevrolet Corvair Monza Spider. Now move ahead to 1990 and the final generation Toronado is born. Unique to this model is the fact that they have one of the first Touch Screen onboard computers in a car, ever made in mass production.

Production stopped in 1992—the end of the Toronado and Troféo trim line. For 1990 GM redesigned the car, giving it the classic tried and true pushrod tuned port injection 3.8L V6, along with new equipment options to compliment the futuristic body design. Space-age was definitely the goal here as seen in an original Fourth generation Toronado ad in the photo gallery. Of course the color of the car chosen in the ad is second best, but you'll get the point.

A word on the word Troféo. For those versed in Italian, the words meaning will appear obvious. For others, it seems a unique and interesting name for an automobile and it is. The idea behind the car was to make it a trophy winner thereby borrowing the Italian word translated TROPHY. Upper-class all the way.

The Troféo trim line was considered the top of the line, featuring leather as standard, automatic transmission, turbine-style alloy wheels, along with factory side skirts and a front air dam and rear diffuser. Integrated fog lights also doubled as DRL's (Daytime Running Lights) on Canadian spec models only. And for a car equipped with DRL's, it is one of the only product lines where the DRL's are wired to come on when the transmission is shifted into gear. In addition to the Troféo being "fully-loaded", only five special options were available which included an in-car cellular phone, the onboard touch screen computer, a CD player, power sunroof and a heated windscreen. Redesign features include smoothed rear corner panels, spaceship-style taillights, and a rounded down aerodynamic hood section (see photos).

The Troféo features fully independent suspension in front and rear; the rear being a single leaf design (option code FE3) borrowed from the C4 CORVETTE yet designed for the Troféo. Four-wheel disc brakes, Bosch ABS, auto-leveling rear suspension, 10-way dual power leather seats, lumbar and thoracic inflatable bladder bags and remote keyless entry were also some nice features on the car.

At a weight of 3455 pounds (1567 kg), it handles like no other in its class. In 1991, being based on a Cadillac Eldorado, you were ensured a very classy ride which it delivered, yet having good damping and little lean around corners. The VIC (Vehicle Information Center) is a screen mounted in the center of the dashboard, which controls HVAC, Radio, Compass, and also allows you to check the status of the engine (RPM, Temp, Oil pressure, etc) including trouble codes in diagnostic mode. This was quite the advancement in automotive technology for the time and made for a great conversation piece.

Limited production numbers, especially for the last two years only totaled 10,000 in 1991-92. Giving such a sporty ride and having a throaty exhaust roar and elegant looks was not what "Oldsmobile" customers of the time were looking for, so GM cut off production in September of 1992. History of the car is now sparse and only few people know what this vehicle is. Apart from the success of the 1960's Oldsmobile Toronado Front-Wheel-Drive V8, this model ended the Toronado line leaving it only as a memory... until NOW!!!

Being that the Toronado Troféo was never available for sale outside of North America, the model you are viewing makes it a very rare collectible to ROW (Rest of The World.)  As one of the lowest mileage well-optioned most desirable color combination of Troféo's still in existence, it is a true survivor. Being originally destined for the Canadian market, it is equipped with full EURO instrumentation and yet has dual-system (metric & imperial) digital instrumentation at the push of a button. Gorgeous Cadillac White Diamond Pearl paint with a Sapphire/White two-tone interior, this is the ONLY ONE of its kind in this combination. A true one-of-one.

ONCE UPON A TIME...

How many cars have you looked at which have more stories to tell than Disney studios? Most cars have been owned by too many people and somewhere down the line the real history of the vehicle got lost. I am always amazed at how people go about to buy a car. The buyer is always more concerned about how much it costs then he/she is with the most important factor—PRIDE OF OWNERSHIP!  When only one person has owned the car or perhaps two, you will likely be provided with a COMPLETE service history. After all, there is no guessing when you buy a car you know everything about, right? Would you marry someone you know nothing about? Unlikely. So why do it when buying a car?

Most important, you will avoid purchasing a car that may be given a write-off or salvage title indicating it has sustained excessive damage and was repaired. Worse yet, you then have no way of knowing how the reconstruction work was done. Are you ready to see what I mean? Then take a close look at the photo showing the documentation that comes with this Italian trophy winner. Even more parts and service records are available. You get it all here. No surprises.

In these photos you’re looking at a very rare & special vehicle—a 1991 Toronado Troféo (that’s Italian for TROPHY) with a full Cadillac package. IN CONCLUSION:

The Troféo is a grand touring vehicle, which allows passengers to sit for long periods during highway travel in comfort. This coupe is actually as long as most full-size four-door sedans at 200.3 inches (508.7 cm) and the interior capacity confirms this with ample headroom (37.8 inches or 96 cm front & rear) and plenty of legroom (43” or 109 cm in front and 35.7” or 90.7 cm in rear.) This makes seating five full-size adults simple. A large capacity trunk (14.1 cu. ft.) also makes it convenient for long trips while hauling large items like golf bags, big-boxed items or oversized suitcases. Those unfamiliar with this model guess it to be a 1998 or 1999 due to its advanced styling. The Troféo was designed way ahead of its time in looks and technology and was also produced in relatively low production numbers. Especially those models with the tri-stage paint and most of the five major options.

This is the only model in the world with this color combination, option configuration and low original mileage of 77735 km.

There are more photographs available showing various angles, close-ups, and even the "before" refurbishment for those who want to better appreciate all that went into the perfection of this collectable. Upon request, another 50+ show all the different visual screens that can appear on the monitor ranging from personal preferences to operational warnings and of course full diagnostic mode. This is a mechanic's best friend; a car he/she can communicate with visually with the touch of a finger accessing all the mechanical and electronic parameters without special code readers or costly equipment. All this available in 1991. Wow!

Please inquire about payment and shipping arrangements to secure this purchase. Remember, this country-spec model was never made available outside of Canada and therefore makes it highly attractive and desirable among collectors in the rest of the world (ROW) market. After all, THIS IS NOT YOUR DADDY'S OLDSMOBILE...
