The Mark I Ford Consul and Zephyr models were first displayed at the Earl's Court Motor Show in October 1950. They were the first ever vehicles to employ the MacPherson Strut independent front suspension which is still widely used today. As a result of utilizing this new suspension design it was decided that the car would have to be of unitary construction, another first for Ford.  Production began with the Consul on 1 January 1951 followed by the Zephyr Six. The convertible model did not make its debut until October of 1951 and only then as a prototype that would not become available to the public until 1953. The delay was necessary in order to get the structural design finalised. Like the saloon, the convertible was of a unitary construction but with the absence of a roof panel, the structure became weak. In mid 1953 Carbodies of Coventry perfected the design and from then until 1962 produced all convertible Consul Zephyr and Zodiac bodies under license for Ford UK. The Mark I models ran until 1956. From April 1956 the Mark II Consul, Zephyr and Zodiac went on sale and were known as the Three Graces. The Mark II range was a very popular car and a big seller for Ford. Production of the Mark II ended in 1962 when the Mark III was introduced. Sadly no Mark III convertibles were made.

Sharing a stable of three classic Zephyrs, this beautiful example from 1962 is for sale to make room for the restoration of a similar car. Purchased some 10 years ago, the services of renowned specialist, Zodiac Motor Services were retained to assist in finding a convertible, not an easy task given the particular requirements of our client and the rarity of this model. Finally, the search ended in Blackpool and this example was purchased from the 5th registered long term keeper. Considered to be in very good original condition, the car was transported back to Zodiac Motors in Kent where a complete survey was carried out. Other than some very minor corrosion found in a small area of the floor pan, Zodiac Motors were relieved to confirm that their initial summary of condition was correct and the following programme of works was authorized.
