Original Condition 1955 Mercedes Benz 300SL Gullwing
Two Owner Car - Same Owner since 1961
Finding one of the most iconic cars in history tucked away in a garage in the southern United States is something most enthusiasts only dream about. This 300SL is one such example.
The Mercedes Benz 300SL Gullwing was and still is among the most incredible cars created. Comparing these cars to any other production car from its time is an unfair comparison. Some of the technology developed and included in the 300SL such as the mechanical fuel injection, independent suspension, tubular space chassis design were not seen again in many cases for years. Technology aside, it was the SL’s styling that was made famous and helped it become the ultra desirable collector car today. The elegant body lines and of course the signature Gullwing doors are an unmistakable trademark of this legendary car. It was that attraction to the cars beauty that begins the story of this particular example.
Purchased new in 1955, this factory silver paint on blue interior Gullwing was delivered to a doctor in California who would retain the car for 6 years, for the era that was a significant amount of time. But it was 1961 when the Mercedes was put up for sale and noticed by a man from Nevada . One look at the beautiful 300SL and he had to have it. A deal was struck, he drove the car home and had a fresh coat of white paint applied, the same white paint seen on the car today. For the next 16 years the car would see lots of use taking part in road trips around the western United States . By 1977 the car was starting to show its age and lots of patina from the years of enjoyment, as a result issues arose with the fuel pump causing the car to be carefully tucked away in the garage until a proper time came to have repairs done. Sadly that day never came and the Gullwing stayed cocooned in its warm, dry garage for over 37 years. The next stage in the SL’s story would begin when it was acquired by Legendary Motorcar from the long time owner and cautiously removed from the garage and made the long journey by truck to the LMC facility. Once there it was inspected and deemed very complete including all belly pans in place, original interior except for seat cushions, original glass, original chrome/trim and the mechanical fuel injector motor was even coaxed back life. After showing that the car would still run it was left largely untouched before being put on display in our showroom. Since that time it has become one of the stars of the collection garnering tons of attention and compliments as the looks and condition of the car tell its story. Now the car represents an incredible opportunity for a collector to acquire one of the most sought after cars in history, a 300SL Gullwing, and one with a very special history to grow on.
