1975 CADILLAC McCLAIN 'COUPE DE FLEUR' HEARSE-CASKET-FLOWER CAR ~SORRY- JUST SOLD~SOLD`SOLD
THANKFULLY, THERE ARE MORE THAN A FEW OF US THAT REALIZE THE "FLOWER CAR - PRO CARS"' ARE THE LAST OF THE HAND-BUILT 'CROWN JEWELS'. VERY FEW WERE EVER BUILT AND ONLY A HANDFUL EXIST TODAY. FOR THOSE OF YOU THAT DON'T KNOW WHAT IT IS ?- THIS IS A VERY 'VISABLE ADDITION' TO THE FUNERAL CAR PROCESSION THAT WAS DESIGNED TO DISCREETLY CARRY A CASKET IN THE STAINLESS STEEL BED OR A LOWER COMPARTMENT THAT HAD AN ELEVATED BED. THEY SERVED DOUBLE-DUTY, 'SPOTLIGHTING' THE DOZENS OF FLORAL TRIBUTES. THE HIGHER PROFILE OF THE DECEASED, THE MORE FLOWERS. WHAT BETTER WAY TO DISPLAY AND HONOR THEM. MOST HEARSES DID NOT HAVE SUFFICIENT SPACE FOR THE CARGO SO, FUNERAL HOMES SOUGHT TO BUY VANS OR CARS TO ASSIST THEIR MOVE FROM FUNERAL HOME TO GRAVESIGHT. MANY STILL USE THEIR 'FIRST CALL' CARS. POPULARITY OF THESE GREAT BEAUTIES BEGAN IN THE 1930'S IN CALIFORNIA WHEN THESE COACHES WERE TERMED "CHICAGO HEARSES" / "WESTERN-STYLE HEARSES" (FLOWERS ONLY) WHILE THE "EASTCOAST VERSION" (FLOWERS & CASKET) HAD IT'S ROOTS IN NEW YORK. SINCE THEY WERE COMPLETELY RESTYLED/ RE-ENGINEERED FROM OTHER PROFESSIONAL CAR MODELS BEING PRODUCED ... THEY WERE NOT INEXPENSIVE. IN FACT, THEY WERE A LOT MORE THAN A HEARSE. ONLY THE MOST SUCCESSFUL FUNERAL DIRECTORS MADE THEM A PART OF THEIR 'FLEET'.
ENGINEERED BY FRANCIS J. McCLAIN IN INDIANA, THE ANDERSON INDIANA HISTORICAL SOCIETY WOULD CLAIM "McCLAIN PERFECTED THE FLOWER CAR FOR FUNERAL HOMES". TURNS OUT, MCCLAIN WAS A LONGTIME REGIONAL DISTRIBUTOR FOR S&S /SAYERS & SCOVILL, IN INDIANA (ONE TRUSTED SOURCE STATES "SUPERIOR"). IN THE AUTO BUSINESS FOR 40 YEARS, HE COMMENCED BUILDING CUSTOM COACHES FROM 1960-UNTIL HIS PASSING AT 67, IN 1983. DURING HIS PROFESSIONAL LIFE HE WAS CONSTANTLY APPROACHED BY FUNERAL DIRECTORS IN HIS REGION, AND ASKED TO PROVIDE A MORE REASONABLY PRICED FLOWER CAR. THIS BECAUSE ALL OF THE 'BIG' COACH BUILDERS CHARGED AN ASTRONOMICAL AMOUNT OF MONEY FOR THEIR CUSTOM MADE FLOWER CARS......OBVIOUSLY, DUE TO THE AMOUNT OF DESIGN, ASSEMBLY TIME REQUIRED AND LIMITED ORDERS. McCLAIN RESPONDED BY DESIGNING A MORE REASONABLY PRICED, 'AFFORDABLE' FUNERAL COACH. BY 1975, IT CAME IN 3 VERSIONS, "THE FLOWER CAR", 'DUO CAR' OR LONGER 'CASKET-CAR'. THE STAINLESS STEEL BED DIMENSIONS VARIED TO THE MISSION DESIRED- FLOWER-ONLY, DUAL CAPABILITY OR 83" FULL CASKET BED CARRYING CAPABILITIES. EACH WAS FIT WITH A SERIES OF CASKET ROLLERS/ CASKET STOPS.
FLOWER CARS CAME TO BE KNOWN, BY ALL COACHBUILDER LINES, AS THE ' TOP OF THE LINE, COMPLETELY CUSTOM MADE MODEL '. AS FEW AS A DOZEN WERE PRODUCED EACH YEAR BY EACH COACH HOUSE. THEIR HEYDAY COMMENCED IN THE 1930'S WHEN OSTENTATIOUS 'GANGSTER' FUNERALS, AND THE GROWING REQUEST FOR POSH CARS TO BE USED IN DIGNITARY FUNERALS, BECAME THE NORM.... ESPECIALLY IN THE BIG CITIES LIKE CHICAGO, LOS ANGELES, NEW YORK, AND MIAMI. THEY PEAKED IN THE 50'S THROUGH THE 70'S AND THEN SALES DIMINISHED. FLOWER CARS, LAVISHED WITH HEAPS OF FLOWERS, FOLLOWED THE BIG HEARSES IN THE CORTEGE , CONVEYING SYMPATHY (OR RESPECT) TO 'THE FAMILY' . THEY HAD BECOME POPULAR AS THE FRONT-LINE CAR IN HIGH DOLLAR FUNERAL FLEETS. TODAY, WHAT FEW ARE BUILT BY EAGLE AND ACCUBILT AT $80.000 A COPY, ARE A STATUS SYMBOL, ESPECIALLY TO THE OLDER FUNERAL HOMES -THAT HAVE RISEN ABOVE THE CORPORATE TAKEOVERS. IT'S GREAT TO HAVE A DEPENDABLE NEO-CLASSIC OR NEWER MODEL, 38 YR.OLD CLASSIC, IN THE FLEET.
PURCHASED NEW JAN. 21,1975 BY THE GREEN FUNERAL HOME IN HAMILTON, OHIO IT THEN PASSED TO THE HALL-JORDAN FUNERAL HOMES LOCATED AT SIX DIFFERENT LOCATIONS IN OHIO. THIS WONDERFUL FUNERAL COACH BASICALLY 'STOPS TRAFFIC' EVERYWHERE IT GOES. IT IS A SUPREME ORIGINAL WITH JUST 21,100 MILES FINISHED IN SABLE BLACK WITH BLACK ULTRA-LEATHER INTERIOR. IT'S COMPLIMENTED WITH A PERFECT PAIR OF ORIGINAL DOOR PANELS & DASH. IT CARRIES THE G.M. 3 -SPEED HYDRAMATIC TRANSMISSION MOUNTED TO A 500 CUBIC INCH V8. THE McCLAIN BROCHURE CLAIMS 205 H.P. / RUNNING ON REG. GAS BUT, OUR RESEARCH SHOWS CADILLAC RATED THEM AT 190 NET. IT IS ALSO OPTIONED WITH G.M. 'CLIMATE CONTROL' AIR CONDITIONING (RESTORED TO 134), AM/FM RADIO , POWER DOOR LOCKS & ANTENNA, HEAVY TINTED WINDOWS. WHITE WALL RADIALS, POWER STEERING & BRAKES, DOOR EDGE GUARDS,CHROME WREATH PACKAGE, PLUS, BLACK VINYL TOP. IT WEIGHS IN AT 7618 LBS. YET GETS SURPRISINGLY GOOD MILEAGE (JUST FINISHED A 90 MILE ROUNDTRIP). EACH '75 CADILLAC CARRIED AS 'STANDARD EQUIPMENT' : CHROME FENDER TRIM, FRONT FENDER LIGHT MONITORS, HIGH-ENERGY IGNITION, AND CATALYTIC CONVERTER.
