Description
The McLaren M1C was a development of the earlier McLaren M1’s and was the last of the McLaren “Customer” cars. A total of 25 M1C’s were produced with most of the cars ending up in the USA or Canada for the CanAm challenge.
Chassis 40/04 remained in the UK and was bought by John Woolfe. Woolfe quickly sold the car to Alistair Cowin who was the first person to really “use” her. He raced in national and international sports car races across Europe in 1968 & ‘69, most notably at the Nuremberg 200 and Solituderennen in Germany. In 1969 he qualified on pole 6 times, won 8 races and set 7 fastest laps.
By 1970 Welshman Ken Wilson had purchased the car and raced in national events (most at Llandow) including a hill climb at Weston Super Mare at the end of the season.
The car then changed hands again with long time racer John Jordan taking ownership. Jordan did over 20 races with the car in 1971 before selling her to ex motor cycle racer Malcolm Clubbe.
Clubbe owned 40/04 for 12 years winning nearly 40 races in a wide variety of races. Clubbe once entered the car in a round of the European Interseries Championship at the Nurburgring.
After Clubbe sold the car to Nick Overall in 1983 the car then went through the following ownership changes: 1988 Kristoff Schausberger, 1998 David Clark, 2001 Graham Galliers, 2006 Richard Dodkins and then finally on to the current owner in 2009.
Prepared by John Felstead and WDK Motorsport the car won on it’s debut in the WSM race at Portimao in the Algarve in 2010. Since then the car has been campaigned in World Sports Car Masters events consistently running at the front of the field. It is also eligible for the 1000km series and CER events
