LANCIA - 1972 Lancia Fulvia Lusso HF 1600 LHD
Following on from the Appia in 1963, it seemed that Lancia had skipped a generation when going to the Fulvia, as in many ways it appeared to be a miniature version of the recently launched Flavia. Although the all-new V4 engine shared the same layout as its predecessor, the boxy styling, front wheel drive transmission, suspension set-up and all-disc brake set-up were almost pure Flavia. The Fulvia proved to be the perfect entry level model for Lancia, and although it initially was powered by a 58bhp 1098cc engine, it had the same brio as its larger cousins.
Lancia teams captured a shocking 11 manufacturer titles between 1972 and 1992 (the first coming in a Fulvia), as well as multiple drivers’ titles, before Fiat pulled the marque out of rallying altogether a decade ago. As such, the Fulvia is credited and respected for its rightful place in automotive history as a harbinger of both execution and things to come.
Though scion Gianni Lancia’s disastrous mid-’50s flirtation with Formula One nearly destroyed the company outright (and flew in the face of his famous racing-driver father’s wishes not to launch competition cars), the marque had some success in continental GT racing. The Aurelia B20 achieved some success in road races like the Targa Florio (including a 1-2-3 finish in 1952, with Felice Bonetto on top), for example, and the Appia GTE Sport won the Italian saloon championship four years running. Lancia’s front-drive Flavia, meanwhile, had some modest success in international rallying in the first half of the ’60s.
Once the petite Fulvia coupe was introduced in 1965, everyone realized that it was only a matter of time before Lancia pursued racing activities with it. Piero Castagnero’s low-waisted, thin-pillared 2+2 design was based on the front-drive, V-4 mounted 2C saloon that was introduced the previous season , but the wheelbase was shortened to less than 92 inches. The style proved popular enough that it was virtually unaltered through its decade-long production run. The base Fulvia coupe’s twin-cam 1.2L V-4 generated just 80hp, though, achieving a top speed of barely 100 mph. Still, it was a step up from the sedan’s 58hp, 1.1L mill. The Fulvia coupe’s hastily prepped racing debut came in November of 1965, at the Tour de Corse rally, where minor power tweaks, a 160-pound weight drop and a re-geared four-speed transaxle saw the new Fulvia score an unlikely eighth place overall.
This was an HF model; HF stood for “high fidelity,” shorthand for the team’s sheer dedication to racing victory. The HF-prepped models offered a modest power boost (to 88hp in the initial 1.2 HF, thanks to bigger carbs and camshafts), and went on a massive weight savings campaign. Bumpers were removed, as were the radio and sound deadening; glass with Plexiglas (or Perspex if you’re feeling European), and the steel hood, doors and trunk lid were replaced with thin sheet aluminum pieces. HF badging announced you to the world on the outside, and a blue-and-yellow wrinkle-finish valve cover lay under hood. To qualify in the correct FIA racing groups, a number of cars needed to be built for homologation.
The first Fulvia HF to gain outright victory was in 1966, sporting a 101hp, 1.3L four; it won the ’66 Rally del Fiori outright, as well as class wins on road racing circuits like Targa Florio and the Nurburgring. A year later, 1,401cc, 127hp versions won both the Spanish rally and Tour de Corse, as well as taking second at the Acropolis, with Sandro Munari behind the wheel. The car’s legend grew throughout Europe in general, and Italy in particular, especially for taking the fight to the traditionally dominant Nordic drivers.
