History
The tremendous success Bentley enjoyed with the R Type Continental continued onto the S Series chassis in late 1955 with a range of new bodies available to collectors. The Park Ward fixed head coupe was originally the brain child of legendary coachwork designer John Blatchley who had been largely responsible for the styling of the R Type Continental by H.J. Mulliner. Six R Type Continental chassis were delivered to the Park Ward works who were then owned by Rolls-Royce. Blatchley was given the task of styling the four drophead coupes and the two further fixed head coupes on the R Type Continental chassis, a design which was later slightly adapted for the marginally longer S1 Continental chassis. BC24AF is fitted with the later, arguably more attractive rear lights, which were adapted when the rear fins were professionally removed during restoration by P.J. Fischer of London, the renowned Bentley specialist. BC24AF is also fitted with the arguably more attractive smaller rear windshield, with larger C posts, built to Design No 701 giving the motor car a more attractive side profile and overall appearance than the later “wrap around rear window” variants (Design No 872). This particular example was sold in 1968 by Paddon Brothers Ltd to a Mr H Zanger of the United States. It remained in the Massachusetts area until 1989 until repatriated and subsequently restored by P.J. Fischer in his London facility. During the very high quality restoration this fine motor car benefited from a bare metal re-paint in pewter and re-trim in green Connolly hides. It has also been fitted with power steering and air conditioning to add to the owners motoring pleasure, with the latter being beautifully blended into the walnut dashboard. More recent works include a full mechanical check which included a gearbox overhaul to ensure smooth transition. BC24AF is one of just forty five cars built to Design No 701 in right hand drive and comes complete with its original handbook; all of its tools and with an extensive history file documenting works carried out over the past four decades. Interestingly enough this motor car is a previous class winner at the Louis Vuitton Concours, highlighting this beautiful examples condition and pedigree. Frank Dale & Stepsons have previously supplied this superb motor car and are delighted to be able to offer it for sale once again. It is in our opinion one of the finest Continental Bentleys we have encountered and must be one of the best example left in existence.
