History
The arrival of the Silver Shadow in 1966 saw a radical change in the way Rolls-Royce manufactured its motor cars. The practice of producing separate chassis and body were replaced by and large with vehicles of unitary construction. However there were some exceptions, those being Rolls-Royces limousine motor cars. The Phantom V was produced during the 1960’s, built along the same lines as the other coachbuilt offerings of the era by Rolls-Royce. In 1968 its worthy successor was launched. The Phantom VI was undoubtedly one of the most luxurious and opulent motor cars produced at the time, regardless of manufacturer. It quickly found favour with heads of state, royalty, captains of industry and celebrities alike. The vast majority of the bodies were constructed at the Mulliner/Park Ward works in Willesden where every possible luxury could be incorporated at the request of the purchaser. Some of the “standard” luxuries included an electric division, picnic tables, air conditioning, occasional seats, reading lights, rear compartment music system and foot rests. Telephones, televisions, cocktail cabinets and other such options were also available, the bespoke nature of this motor car no doubt adding to its appeal. Its graceful lines, effortless power, high quality construction, luxurious finish and the comfort if offered its passengers insured its success over a twenty three year production period, with just less than four hundred cars produced in total. Chassis No PRH 4636 was originally supplied in April of 1971 by Jack Barclay Ltd, delivered to its first owner the Duke of Bedford at his residence at Woburn Abbey. It was used on a regular basis by the Duke for twenty years until it was acquired by its second and most recent owner in 1991. During the second period of ownership PRH 4636 received significant improvements that included but were not limited to a new stainless steel exhaust system, re-trim to the rear compartment, engine overhaul, braking system overhaul, carburettor overhaul, re-built back axle and re-polished interior woodwork. A large history file documents the extensive expenditure over the past two decades, with the car being maintained to a very high standard regardless of cost. Following such fastidious care over so many years, Chassis No PRH 4636 is understandably still in excellent condition in every respect. Most recently the car was completely re-trimmed in tan leather with matching Wilton carpets. It also comes serviced and prepared as per our normal policy, to ensure continued trouble free use. It is complete with tools, handbook, copies of the original chassis cards, original Rolls-Royce sales literature and an extensive history file. Chassis No PRH 4636 is one of the best Phantom VI limousines we have had the opportunity to offer for sale for some years and should be seen in person to be appreciated fully.
