1967 Mercedes-Benz 250SL

The 250 SL version of the Mercedes Pagoda is the rarest of them all, with a production run of just over a year. It benefited from the stiffer, sportier suspension of the early 230 model but was much more agile with more torque, making it better suited to an automatic gearbox which is always the preferred option for these cars. Power steering was a cost option but in reality most cars were built with it. The 250 was also the first model to be offered as a 2+2 “California” coupe which had a rear bench seat and hard top but no soft top.

This car is a 1967 250 SL “California” in its original colour, Mercedes 180 Metallic Silver with black leather interior. The mileage is 75,000km (47,000 miles) which is almost certainly correct. It was first registered and used in California for the first 30 years of its life before being exported to the Netherlands where it resided in a heated garage for the next 18 years.

The condition is outstanding - this Pagoda has never had or needed a restoration, although it was repainted in 2009 due to fading of the original paint. In the last few hundred KM it has been treated to a minor re-commissioning including the fitting of a new fuel tank and lines and an engine service.

The upper body and underside of this car are in remarkable original condition – the original spot welds are still present where the outer wings meet the inner ones, the underside appears to be completely original and the panel fit is, as you would expect, excellent. The interior trim is also impressive, particularly as it is all original. The engine gearbox power steering and suspension are all functioning well and it drives beautifully.
