Description

1973 Ferrari 246 GT Dino

We are pleased to offer 1973 Euro model Dino (Ferrari) 246 GTS Spyder s/n 07134, a very well documented Dino with one owner from 1983 to today, so for the last thirty-two years. Treated to a complete down-to-the-bare-frame cosmetic and mechanical restoration by (ex-Dan Gurney’s All American Racers Indy car mechanic), Harold White of Harold White Enterprises, 47 Industrial Way, Placentia, CA, 92670. Engine rebuilt with new valves, new pistons, rings, pins, main and rod bearings, timing chains, cylinder head studs, water pump rebuild, new clutch, pressure plate and throw out bearing. The transaxle had all new syncros, bearings and seals. The body and suspension were completely disassembled, the suspension and brakes were completely rebuilt, the frame was sand blasted and painted from bare metal. New rocker panels and new door bottoms were fabricated and fitted. The doors, hood and deck lids were refitted and realigned and the body was primered with high quality epoxy primer and deep red lacquer no longer available today. Repainted to Ferrari red (Rosso Corsa) paint with all new tan leather “Daytona” seats, door panels and dark brown carpets. The restoration was started in October 1988 and was completed in September 1989. Mileage at the end of the restoration was 97,254 kms (60,431 miles). Mileage today is 97,706 kms (60,712 miles), so only 452 kms (281 miles) since the complete “frame up” restoration. Total invoices were $92,286.61 at a time when the hourly shop rate was a mere $50 per hour. Comes with every detailed invoice in a well-organized file and a complete 46 page photo album showing the step by step restoration. Pre-sale inspection in process, call for a copy by PDF.
As a Euro model 246 GTS, s/n 07134 is lighter than a US model and has the more efficient Euro model headers and exhaust for higher power and better performance through the RPM range. As a mechanically “new” Ferrari Dino, all systems work as they should. The car starts with a turn of the key, the clutch is light and the transmission is smooth and effortless. The syncros, brakes and suspension components are all “new” as one would expect on a 452 kms (281 miles) Dino. The body and panel fit and paint are excellent. The tan leather is also “as new”. The body, chassis and under panels are all exceptionally clean. 246 GTS s/n 07134 was restored to a very high and very user-friendly “driver” level, although the steering wheel is aftermarket, the dash is in smooth vinyl — not the typical mouse fur and some cosmetic details in the engine compartment are incorrect. Comes with an owner’s manual, the correct jack, the correct tool roll and some tools.
The 246 GT coupe and later 246 GTS spyder were the first evolution of Ferrari’s higher-volume, smaller-engine exotics, meant to appeal to a larger market than the flagship V-12s. Named after Enzo Ferrari’s son, Alfredino, who died in 1956 at the age of 24 of muscular dystrophy, the Dino was the first of the ‘baby’ Ferraris — smaller, lighter and more nimble than any other street Ferrari. Its transverse mid-engine was a Ferrari first in a street car, and the four-cam V6 shows its direct racing heritage from the V6 powered 206 SP and V6 powered F2 Ferraris. Styling was by Pininfarina and stands as one of the most beautiful and exotic Ferraris of the period. Thanks to the Dino’s low sweeping body lines and the sounds of the well-proven, low-maintenance, high-revving V-6 right behind your seat, every trip to your local coffee shop sounds, drives and feels like a qualifying lap at Sebring.
In July 2013, 246 GTS s/n 07134 was serviced by Ferrari of Newport Beach at 97,671 kms (60,690 miles), so only 35 kms (22 miles) ago. The bumpers were also re-chromed, a rebuilt ammeter was installed, the trunk strut was repaired and reinstalled and a new set of Michelin Green X 205/70/14 tires were installed and balanced. Total invoice was $3,389.09. Ferrari 246 GTS s/n 07134 offers everything the Dino enthusiast could want — a “done” Dino that shows well and drives like a near-new, pride-of-ownership 246 GTS with amazing paperwork and photo documentation. We welcome any mechanical or body inspection and any personal inspection. All paperwork on file. Priced right and seriously for sale at $349,500 or best offer.
