Description
The history of Lancia’s fabled D50 Grand Prix racer is all too brief. Vittorio Jano’s brilliant new design for the 1954 season was powered by a 2.5-liter quad-cam V8 that served as a stressed chassis member. To improve balance and handling, pannier fuel tanks were mounted between the front and rear wheels. The technically-advanced D50 soon proved it was faster than the favored Mercedes, but after just one race in 1954, one in 1955, and the unexpected death of its top driver, Lancia called it quits, selling its cars and spares to Scuderia Ferrari. With an infusion of cash from FIAT and renamed as Ferrari 8CLs, the ex-Lancia Ferraris went on to give Juan Fangio a World Championship in 1956. In the mid-1990s, British Lancia collector Anthony Maclean learned that Italian craftsman Guido Rosani had created a new replica D50 chassis with an original D50 engine. Maclean commissioned a small series of modern replicas from Rosani and Luciano Basso, using factory blueprints and original D50 engines and gearboxes rebuilt by British craftsman Jim Stokes. These reconstructions are described in all respects as even better than the originals. This fine example was built for the late Tom Wheatcroft, and has been issued an FIA Historical Technical Passport.
