Description
The Jaguar XK140 was introduced in 1954 and sold from 1955 to 1957 when it was replaced by the XK150. Technically it was very similar to its predecessor the XK120, but with improvements to suspension, steering and brakes. Styling differences included larger bumpers, different grille and a chrome strip to the centre of the bonnet and boot lid. Also the engine and bulkhead were moved 3” further forward to give driver and passenger more legroom making it a much more comfortable car to drive!
The XK140 continued to use the same 3442cc six cylinder engine from the XK120 but with a 10hp increase in power to 193hp in its standard form. A more powerful version was offered as an option using the ‘C’ type cylinder head producing 213hp and designated XK140 SE (XK140 MC in the USA). This car was capable of 120mph and 0-60 in around 8 seconds!
The XK140 production was very much aimed at the US market and the vast majority of cars went there, with only 74 RHD Roadster or OTS (open two seater) examples like this one being built!
The XK140 came in three different body styles: The Roadster, or OTS as it was known in the USA, had a light canvas top that folded behind the two seats, canvas and plastic side curtains and removable windscreen. The interior was trimmed in leather and leatherette including the dash.
The Drop Head Coupe had a heavier lined canvas hood that lowered onto the body behind the seats, a fixed windscreen integral to the body, wind up windows and small rear seat. It also had walnut veneer dashboard and door cappings.
The Fixed Head Coupe shared the interior trim and rear seat with the DHC but the roof line was lengthened by moving the windscreen forward, shorter wings and longer doors to give better access and more interior room.
This original RHD car left the factory in February 1956 to be delivered to Bryson’s in Sydney Australia and was first registered to A.G Adams on 12th April 1956. By 1960 it had come into the hands of Bernie Maudsley who raced it that year in the Australian Grand Prix meeting at Lowood Queensland! Next owned by David Martin said to be a bassoon player with the Queensland Symphony Orchestra who then sold it to Ray McGhie of Brisbane in 1969. Robert Gill of Towong bought it in 1971 and entered it in the Jaguar National Rally in Cowra in 1972. He also wrote an article about the car in the magazine ‘Sports Car World’ in June 1974. It eventually came into the hands of Jim Byrne of Sydney in 1980 who became the custodian for the next 34 years! A full restoration was started in 2009 and eventually finished in 2013 with over $200,000 AUS being spent!!! The current owner purchased the car upon completion of the restoration and decided to return it to the UK
The car is offered fully restored and in superb condition. Only 74 examples of a RHD Roadster were ever made and only 3 were exported to Australia, along with this cars sporting history, making this a very rare car indeed!
