Description
Captain L.G Hornsted began his motor racing career in 1910. As the British representative for Benz he enjoyed numerous successes whilst driving 60 and 150hp Benz motorcars. Upon delivery of a 200hp ‘Blitzen Benz’ Hornsted went on to set a number of world records. June 24th 1914 saw him break the world land speed record by averaging a speed of 124.09 mph over one mile.
At the end of the Great War in 1918 Capt Hornsted came across an ex-army 24hp Dodge which had been abandoned in the River Rhine. Following what could only have been a major restoration this car was successfully used in many motor-racing events, some of which were documented in both the Light Car and Cycle Car magazine.
The car offered
KX2272 that I offer provides the unique opportunity to acquire a replica of Hornsted’s own car. This car started life as a 1917 Dodge Tourer and was purchased by VSCC members and librarians, Mr Ian Ferguson and Mr Andy Butcher in the 2000’s. They acquired a complete but stripped car. According to the accompanying history file the pair instructed a specialist restorer to undertake the work of the meticulous restoration, with the end goal of producing a of replica the infamous “Hornsted Special”. The discovery of a magazine advert from the 1920’s was invaluable when it came to the re-creations bodywork! New replica timber frame and aluminium bodywork was reproduced, which in turn has been brush painted, for period authenticity. Despite the fact the tourer had been standing in a dismantled state for sometime, the condition of all the major components were much better than expected. This was a great starting point for the ensuing mechanical restoration which included a re-build of the engine and running gear, the starter/generator was sent to a specialist for rebuild, 5 new road wheels commissioned, also a new crown wheel and pinion, which gives 34 mph per 1,000 rpm in top gear! More recent servicing works include an overhaul and rebuild of the gearbox.
All in all a versatile road engined Edwardian which has in recent years enjoyed various aspects of VSCC competition life, from hill climbs to a class award at Madresfield driving tests. More recently by the present owner a spot of trailing at the 2015 Lakeland trial, where despite the weather the pilot and co-pilot had a hugely enjoyable if slightly damp day to remember including an easy assent of the famous Drumhouse (photos available)! Whilst compiling this writeup, I asked the owner about his thoughts that day, he said ‘I couldn’t think of a more enjoyable away of spending quality time with my son, and it was great day to reminisce over, after Christmas day dinner around an open log fire with a brandy, and I’m sure it will mentioned over many years a an thoroughly enjoyable day with my slightly crazy Dad!’ Doing the Lakeland in something other than an Austin 7 was the catalyst for which he purchased the car! Now that box is ticked KX2272 is available once more. As you can read/see KX2272 is an excellent all-round VSCC Edwardian with bags of torque from its 3440cc 4 cylinders.
KX2272 also comes with associated paperwork such as current DVLA V5C, copy of FIVA Identity Card, a new VSCC Buff form will need to be applied for as per normal. Along with numerous period Dodge Brothers booklets, owner’s manual and a memory stick containing photographs taken throughout its restoration. Weather equipment extends to a tonneau cover.
