1926 Austin Seven Sports

Understood to be the sole surviving Austin 7 Burghley Sports built by the Wilson Motor company. In 1926 it is understood that 1000 chassis were provided to independent coach work company, Wilson Motor Co., for their Burghley range which had the sports chassis. This was effectively a standard chassis with a specially raked steering column. This sports modification effectively lowed the steering wheel which also enabled the seating position to be moved further back.

Wilson Motors of London manufactured the Austin 7 ‘Burghley Sports’ from 1924 to the end of 1929. This particular car dates from 26th August 1926. Early models were constructed from steel panels on an Ash frame and later, for an extra £5, bodies could be specified with an aluminium skin just like Chassis A/1020. The Sports body was in the style of a Skiff or Boat-tail, complete with Varnished Wood decking to the top face of the tail.

Sadly in 1936 OP327 was taken off the road for a unknown reason and lay inactive throughout WWII. I am told that around the time of WWII the body was removed from the Chassis and used as a coal store (possibly to help save the car). In the late 1960’s she was purchased by Mike Christy complete with the original body which had seen better days by this point. In early 1972 Mike started the restoration process copying the original body as best he could.

Upon completion, Mike was able to show OP327 to Miss Betty Haig, the famous lady racing driver from the 1930’s. She had been given a brand new Burghley Sports for her 17th Birthday in 1927. She pleasingly informed Mike that his hard work had paid off, such was a the likeness to the original form. It is understood that there were 3 styles of flared wings available.

The current owner bought her at Sotheby’s Hendon sale in May 1993. Before that she had resided for 5 years in a private museum. Prior to these 5 years of rest she was trialled in VSCC events by Mike Bullet. In the winter of 1993 the new owner set his heart on Class 1 VSCC hill climbing with his new acquisition, so to that end, the engine was removed and the following work undertaken. A 1” 5/16 Phoenix Crank was fitted with a larger Raeburn sump and other goodies, so the next owner of ‘Bertie’ can be reassured that there have been some useful performance additions!. These modifications have had the desired effect, however this has moved her into the VSCC Modified classification, although the original carburettor and exhaust manifold can be reinstated so to get her back to standard class, and therefore she would be eligible for light car events. Full weather equipment stores away in the tail area which has ample space for weekend bags and even a small tent! Flag also included….. the gear box is a 3 speed, however this has close ratios and the rear axle is a RN type so has the longer and stronger nose on the banjo.

There is very little from stopping a new owner from putting her back to original, or just enjoying this rare car as she is….  It’s not unusual to see early rare model Austin Sevens commanding and changing hands for in excess of £30,000.

VSCC Buff form and History file accompany the car.
