1967 Lamborghini 400GT 2+2
Chassis No. LAM062267
In 1966 Lamborghini introduced their new 400GT 2+2 at the Geneva Auto show as the replacement to the 400GT (interim) model and previous to that their 350GT model. The new Lamborghini 400GT 2+2 was skinned with all new steel body work that was completely revised to make room for the new set of back seats and more overall interior room. Carrozzeria Touring, who was commissioned to create the production version of the car, was able to maintain the unique and attractive proportions from the 350GT while also creating the additional space required for the two back seats on the new 400GT 2+2. Touring achieved this by retaining the same front windscreen, but by lowering the floor pan and stretching the entire body slightly taller. The extra height came from a higher belt line, as the 400GT 2+2 is noticeably taller when examining the additional space from the top of the front wheel arch to the body crease. The end result is a beautiful car that is only 2.6 inches higher than its predecessor but very similar in proportion to the 350GT. Besides the added height of the new 400GT 2+2, probably the most noticeable difference between it and previous models are the paired headlights that replaced the early sculpted units that the 350GT wore.
Mechanically speaking, the new 400GT 2+2s utilized the larger and more powerful 320-hp, 355 ft lbs of torque, 3929-cc version of the Bizzarini-designed six-Weber V-12. Lamborghini also introduced their own new five-speed gearbox that was noticeably easier to use and quieter than the 350GT’s ZF built unit. Slight changes to the four-wheel independent suspension were also introduced to accommodate the car’s 400 extra pounds of weight. In all, 224 examples of the 400GT 2+2 were built and these early GT Lamborghini's are seen today as some of the most desirable and usable of the marques front-engine cars. Aside from their excellent performance and comfort these early Lamborghini's displayed a traditional sense of styling that was not seen in later front engine V-12 Lamborghini's.
Paul Russell and Company is excited to offer this 1967 Lamborghini 400GT 2+2, Chassis no. LAM062267, for sale. This Red/Tan leather example was purchased by its current owner from famed automotive historian Ken Gross over 20 years ago. It features the 5-speed all synchro [even reverse] Lamborghini designed gearbox, and has a rated top speed of 155mph. With the exception of the front seats the interior is all original and there is zero rust or corrosion on the body or chassis. The car recently received a complete engine rebuild, as well as a new clutch, brakes, and suspension. It runs, drives, and presents beautifully and would be an excellent car for weekend trips, car shows, or any one of the number of rallies offered today.
