1970 Mercedes-Benz 300SEL 6.3
Chassis No. 109.018.12.003034
The 1970 Mercedes-Benz 300SEL 6.3 is considered the genesis of the large luxury Sports Sedan segment and a coveted model among Mercedes-Benz collectors. It combines the typical German engineering, build quality, and performance of their sports cars with the luxury and comfort of their touring sedans. The 300SEL 6.3 was created by fitting Mercedes’ excellent, 300hp/434 ft/lbs of torque, 6.3 liter V8 with Bosch fuel injection from their 600 and 600 Pullman series, into the standard 300SEL body, thus creating an amazing combination of performance and luxury. Mercedes-Benz also added larger wheels, a four-speed automatic transmission, upgraded power four-wheel ventilated disc brakes, and four-wheel independent suspension; which included air suspension. Many other extra features were included as standard items, such as air conditioning, radio, leather upholstery, power steering, and power windows. This new combination allowed the 300SEL 6.3 to accelerate from 0-60mph in 6.5 seconds and to reach speeds of almost 140 mph while also maintaining handling that befits its size; which hadn’t been seen by the automotive world in a Sports Sedan to date. At almost $16,000 the 300SEL 6.3 was not inexpensive by any standard, as it cost more than double that of the new Porsche 911S, but it’s well rounded performance made it the sedan to have in 1970. Its high cost also contributed to its low production numbers with only 6,526 units being produced and many of those cars being lost to extensive use, rust, and the elements over the years. Of those 6,526 cars produced, only 1,839 cars made it to the United States. The 300SEL 6.3 was considered to be one of the most sophisticated cars of its time, and still today it has a devoted following in the automotive collector car world. It is the perfect combination of performance and luxury.
Paul Russell and Company is excited to offer this beautiful 1970 Mercedes-Benz 300SEL 6.3 for sale. This car is originally a Texas car that was sold by OGE Oldsmobile in Tyler Texas in 1970. The car was completely restored in the early 90’s and still shows extremely well. The body was fully stripped of all paint, and being a Texas car, displayed no signs of rust at all. Two coats of epoxy primer were used and then it was finished in original Mercedes-Benz Silver paint. All new weather stripping for the doors, windshield, rear glass, and trunk were installed and all chrome parts were disassembled, cleaned, and polished. New window channels and sash weather stripping were also installed.
The engine and transmission were completely rebuilt and any worn parts were replaced with genuine Mercedes-Benz parts. If new parts were not available accurately rebuilt parts were sourced. The rear axles were pulled and rebuilt with new air bags, vented disks, rebuilt calipers, and a new stainless steel exhaust was installed. The under-body was completely cleaned and repainted as well.
The interior is in excellent condition and almost all original, the wood around the dash and windows were all refurbished and in excellent shape. The car runs and drives great with no squeaks or rattles and the sophisticated air suspension works as it should. It has been serviced here at Paul Russell and Company the last 6+ years and is in excellent driving condition.
