1968 Shelby

In the Spring of 1968  brought with it a special order color program from Ford.   WT 6066 was one of five unique colors that added to the established available palette and actually replaced the unloved Sunlit Gold.  The Gold was retired at the same time the 428 Police Interceptor motor was replaced by the 428 Cobra Jet.  As a result, no Sunlit Gold GT500KR's ever produced.  144 of the 159 special paint Shelby's were yellow and the only to use black rocker panel stripes.  Just 42 of those are GT500KR convertibles, all highly prized among Shelby collectors.

This '68 GT500KR convertible, #3279, was sold new at Jim Aikey Ford in DesPlaines, IL.  It passed through a couple of owners and then purchased by tennis star, Jimmy Connors as a gift for his wife, Playboy Playmate Patty McQuire.  Her favorite color, unfortunately, was not yellow.  At her request, Jimmy had the car repainted blue.   In 2002 it turned up for sale showing 45,184 miles on the odometer and painted the correct shade of WT 6066 Yellow.   In 2013 it underwent a complete restoration to a concours standard by renown Shelby experts, Billups Auto Body of Colcord, OK.   She made her juding debut at SAAC-39 at Road America in Elkhart Lake, WI where she won Division II Concours Gold.  That was backed up by another Concours Gold win at Mid-America Ford Team Shelby Nationals in 2014.
