Description
While many of us remember the early days of drag racing when blown gas coupes ruled the quarter mile, others may need to have their memories jogged. They might need a little reminder to help them recall what life was like before the advent of the Funny Car. In the 1960s the blown gassers were some of the most exciting and most publicized racers in drag racing. Gas Coupe and Sedan classes had to maintain stock wheelbases and the engine relocation was limited. When you think gasser, most people conjure up an image of a ’41 Willys, a Hilborn scoop poking through the hood, and that nose high stance coming at you. Drag racing fans were eager to see racers like Stone-Woods-Cook, "Big John" Mazmanian, Mallicoat Bros., and many more.
Highlights:
Exterior
Originally built from the ground up in 1992, a new paint scheme was applied in 1999 featuring a beautiful shade of Medium Blue with an overlay of Magenta 3D Flames and Mercedes Pearl White on the front end. The body is mostly steel with the exception of the fiberglass tilt or lift-off front end and the widened and extended rear fenders. The body is also insulated from the top to the bottom. In the rear is a full trunk without the sacrifice of space due to being tubbed. All body lines and panel gaps are perfect and the frenched antenna adds a nice nostalgic touch. Overall, the body is in remarkable condition for the age of the car with a few very minor stress cracks.
Interior
The custom reclining Recaro bucket seats, door panels, console, and full roll cage are upholstered in color matched supple Eggshell White calf skin leather. The dash houses a full complement of AutoMeter Pro Comp gauges and power window switches. A console-mounted B&M Quarter Stick stirs the gears of the built TH400 transmission. Dark Blue wool carpeting graces the cockpit as well as the trunk area.
Engine and Driveline
One glance over the hood and you can't help but notice the tops of the staggered injector stacks staring back at you. Lift the hood and you are greeted by an engine bay filled with lots of chrome, billet, and color matching components. At the heart of this is a 1970 Chevy 454 big block bored to 468 cubic inches, fully balanced and blueprinted, with ported and polished oval port heads, and custom built chrome long-tube headers, making an honest 500+ HP. Saving the best for last… The 'wild injected look' is complements of a Garlits Performance Products IN600 STREET INDUCTION unit that completely mounts over and covers a Holley 4150 series 750 CFM double pumper carb and intake manifold. Features include a fully machined and highly polished aluminum casting, famous staggered Crower-style ram tube stacks with custom purple tops, 2 1/2' tall K&N Filter elements, authentic looking dummy barrel valve, lines and anodized fittings, etc. The unit allows all of this without the associated problems and costs of running a real injector setup! Built GM TH400 transmission with 2000 RPM converter. Early 1960s Olds/Pontiac rear end with 4.33:1 ratio and Summers Brothers Racing forged steel axles. Adjustable 4-link rear suspension with coilover shocks. Front suspension consists of a chromed tubular straight axle and a semi-elliptical spring suspension system. J.F.Z. Racing Disc brakes on all four corners. The tubular frame is custom made with high dollar components throughout. A custom chromed 4" dropped front axle is available with this Willys that will easily transform the Coupe from the 1960s "Gasser" style to a "Pro-Street" look.
Wheels and Tires
Front wheels are ET Gassers 15X4 on radial tires. Rear wheels are Centerline Convo Pros 15X14 on M/T Sportsman Pro 33X19.50 15 tires.
Being offered for sale is this remarkable custom, hand built, 1941 Willys Coupe that is sure to bring back some of those memories from the sixties. Also no stranger to publicity, in 1992, the Willys was a "Top Ten" selection in the prestigious International Show Car Association (ISCA) Pacific Division; followed by a cover story in the March, 1994 edition of Street Rodder Magazine.
