Description

1958 Mercury Montclair

Beautifully restored 1958 Mercury Turnpike Cruiser w/Super Marauder J-code 430ci 400hp V8 engine. The 430ci, 400HP Super Marauder Engine with Tri-Power was the highest horsepower engine available in any American car in 1958. Equipped with a very rare dealer installed Super Marauder high performance triple carburetor & intake manifold set up which enabled the optional 430 CI V-8 engine to produce 400 HP. This new engine, available only on the Montclair, was developed by Bill Stroppe to assist Mercury in shedding its stodgy public image & enabling the company to contend in the NASCAR racing series for its second season. 3-Speed Merc-O-Matic push button transmission. Complete Frame-Off Restoration with Impeccable Attention to Detail. Options include; Factory Air Conditioning, Power Windows, Power Locks, Power Memory Seat, Power Antenna, Power Steering, Power Brakes, Push-Button Trans, Power Rear Window, Factory Skirts, Continental Kit with Extended Rear Bumper and Mounted Spare. With its fabulous 3-tone paint, lots of chrome, Jukebox interior, wide white tires, 'Breezeway' retractable rear window, "twin jet" air intakes at upper corners of car's windshield and tail-fins, this car has that fantastic 'Futuristic' look and definitely is among the finest at any show.
America of the 1950s and 60s was fascinated with anything that flew or went into space. It was the beginning of the space age and everyone wanted to be apart of it. It seemed like every car wanted to be a space ship. Arguably, one car from Mercury may have been the best example. It was the 1957/1958 Turnpike Cruiser. The 1957 and 1958 Mercury Turnpike Cruisers were halo models for the Mercury and they might best be described as the Jetsons meet Detroit. They are remembered for the unique styling cues and wide array of gadgets including a power rear window that could be lowered to improve ventilation, "twin jet" air intakes at the upper corners of the front windshield, "seat-o-matic" automatically adjusting seat, and an average speed "computer". The continental kit's official name was "Dream Car Spare Tire Carrier, also available were "Bubble Skirts", (also known as "Cruiser Skirts").
When you look at what was out there at the time, nothing comes close to the Cruiser. That beautiful projectile down the side quarters to the taillamps was simply beautiful. The covering over the rear window, the projectiles out of the roof in front, that amazing windshield, the rear window that lowered behind the rear seat for ventilation, and those beautiful fender skirts with thin outline molding -- the car was just beautiful.
This beautiful completely restored Merc proves all of these years later, that these cars were unappreciated in their time; ahead of their time, and will be given their proper place as valuable classics.
