1966 Austin Mini

Dispatched to a Californian dealer on the 23rd of September 1966 and first registered on the 1-1-1967, in California. Original body shell, engine, running gear and trim set Matching numbers as per Heritage certificate, with all major body tags/ numbers and date stamps on engine components in place and purchased from the USA in 2008.

Overall comments

A most original 1275cc Mini Cooper S sympathetically re-commissioned with the engine and gearbox just rebuilt and still requiring running in. Fitted with the rare and desirable period Mini components such as Magnesium minilite wheels, bucket seats, a Downton cylinder head and modified carburettors. The Car is UK registered (so EU taxes paid) and can be viewed in Dorset, England by appointment.

Body

In excellent original condition with mostly original paintwork. For reference original condition does not mean it is new condition, it has patina, lots of it' which takes years to replicate. Specific details of the bodywork as follows; The rear quarter on drivers side looks like it was replaced some time back judging by condition of the paint, otherwise it is all original panel work to include the front panel and sills. The front panel is correctly finished with the inset section painted black, seldom seen in restored cars. The body number located on front panel matches number on heritage certificate. The floor number is still there and scarcely seen on the majority of cars due to replacement floors being fitted. Factory sealing to the magic wand blanking plate hole, correct location of holes for remote mount, totally correct locations for voltage regulator and fuse box, tabs for breather as per factory and the original chassis plate has never been removed. All the above are good indicators of a very original Cooper S body shell which is rarely seen these days.

Interior

The original red and gold brocade trim set is still in the car. The original carpets are in the rear however the front carpet is an original period item but from an earlier car, wool backed rather than the correct Veltone item - both are extremely difficult to find. A correct period pair of Les Leston / Microcell bucket seats are fitted with the original upholstery, the square pattern is very rare and hard to find. Original head lining good but not perfect original condition.

Mechanical

Original engine block and internals with all S specific features intact, S clutch housing, petroflex oil cooler hoses etc and presumed original gearbox casing Engine components where date stamped match other stamps of the car - distributor, starter motor, dynamo, which is seldom seen The engine was fitted on purchase with a Special Tuning / Downton head to stage 2 specification, and the gearbox was fitted with an original Special Tuning straight cut gear set. Recently the engine and gearbox has been totally rebuilt by a top Mini specialist , Southam Mini and Metro centre. The only deviations from standard were a +30 bore using NOS Hepolite pistons and the fitment of a Lightweight flywheel, retaining all components listed above. Carburation is via a pair of Downton modified H4s. The dynamo is fitted with the rare Special Tuning larger diameter cast flywheel, a Lucas sports coil is used and a HRG rocker cover, as supplied by the Downton agents at the time tops it all off. Suspension and running gear is in remarkable condition, retaining nearly all the original factory black paint. A set of correct Blue Band displacer units are fitted, the date stamps on the units match the car, these were pressure tested before re-use. Single blues at front, doubles at rear Radius arm pins, bushes, rubbers etc have been replaced with either NOS or genuine parts. A set of magnesium mini lites are fitted with the lip at the outer circumference, the correct period items. Components were removed, cleaned and checked for condition / refurbished were possible. The suspension items were treated with a light coating of wax to protect the original finishes. All good and driving well.
