IN FOCUS:
August Horch was born in Winningen, Rhenish Prussia 1868 and came to be one of the founding fathers of the German automobile industry. After finishing technical school he came to work for a manufacturer of marine engines before ending up at the Karl Benz factory in Mannheim. Horch spent three years at the Benz factory before setting up his own company A. Horch & Co in 1899. Eventually the production moved to the city of Zwickau in Saxony. Here Horch stayed until 1909, when he left the company after a disagreement with his partners.
Instead he founded a competing company. Since he did not own the right to his own name he called the new company Audi Automobil-Werke GmbH, today known as Audi. In fact, Horch is the German equivalent to the Latin word Audi.
Meanwhile the Horch factory continued producing high quality automobiles. Eventually the two companies became one again as a part of Auto Union AG together with DKW and Wanderer. It is at this time that the current Audi logotype with the four rings representing the four companies saw the light of day for the first time.
In the 1930s the Horch brand of Auto Union established itself as a luxury brand and was the only serious domestic competitor of luxury cars to Mercedes-Benz. This auction´s 830 BL series was introduced in 1935 and in production until 1940.
After the Second World War the Horch factory in Zwickau ended up in East Germany. The days of luxury car production in Zwickau came to an end. Even today Horch still represents the absolute pre-war luxury German car. Uppsala Auktionskammare is proud to present a part of automobile history with the car presented in this sale.
