What is it about Buick? What is the condition that returns every decade or so, forcing the engineers who build what once were called "Doctor's Cars," solid-citizen sedans and the like, to suddenly be transformed into high-performance, tire-smoking, muscle car building mad men?
Beginning with the gorgeous (and expensive) Skylarks of the 50's, the boys at Buick (and they were ALL boys back then) managed to sneak a limited number of really hot machines past the Darth Vader-like committee approval structure at General Motors. This is, after all, the GM division that produced the only spec-built pursuit vehicle ever ordered by the FBI, the legendary GNX. Who knew?!
There couldn't be a better example of what one reviewer called, "Loosely -moralled engineers" than this superb new find from Benchmark Classics, America's Hot Rod, Custom, Specialty and Muscle Car Playground in Middleton, Wisconsin. This is a 1970 Buick GS455, a car that a previous owner blessed with many options specific to the limited production GS Stage One. If a doctor did drive this legend, those house calls must have been a real rush!
The Stage One mods are apparent right away. This is an Apollo White GS, with blacked out hood (and the often lusted after hood mounted tach, too.) There's a big black stripe, outlined in red pinstriping, running around the top of the fender line, wrapping around the low profile trunk-mounted spoiler that announced to on and all, "Don't mess with this car!" Benchmark's beauty, originally a not-to-be dismissed GS455, now is presented in full Stage One dress. It sure looks good.
That 455 mill is a honey. It boasted more displacement, bigger valves, and a hotter cam than any previous GM motor and included standard cold air induction through functional hood scoops. The 455 was rated at 350hp and a pavement pounding 510lb-ft of torque. No wonder we called them muscle cars: 510 lbs of torque in 1970! Note that this 455 has the correct casting number for a Stage One block, but does not have Stage One heads, retaining GS heads.
This car has a 3-speed automatic with Buick's own floor-mounted "goal post" gate shifter available from the Stage One Package. It is here, looking good, nestled between a set of the black Stage One specific bucket seats. It all sits on a set of GS "Star" mag wheels, wrapped in great looking Firestone Firehawk Indy 500 rubber.
The original build sheet from the Kansas City Assembly Plant comes with the car. It specifies that it was originally shipped to Chicago's Dana Buick, one of the semi-secret "skunk works" employed by those engineering elves inside of General Motors who wanted to make sure that their high-performance "Doctor's cars" were given the best of care. This powerful beast was treated right from the start.
This is the type of car you can just stare at or it could be used as it was meant to be, scaring every chicken along every back blacktop in the entire county. That's a nice set of options!
Which ever option you decided on, this Apollo White road rocket from the secret laboratories at Buick is waiting for you, behind the big doors at Benchmark Classics, off the West Beltline Highway, on University Avenue, Highway 14 in Middleton, Wisconsin.
