Donald Healey aus Cornwall war seit frühester Jugend an Autos und Autorennen interessiert. Im Mai 1958 stellte Healey und sein Sohn den kernigen, offenen SPRITE "auf die Straße". Zu dem charakteristischen Styling des originalen Sprites gehörten Scheinwerfer auf der Motorhaube, was zu dem weltweit üblichen Spitznamen "FROSCHAUGE" führte.
