MODEL HISTORY
The Ford Sierra RS Cosworth was a high-performance version of the standard Sierra, and was built from 1986 to 1992. It was the result of a Ford Motorsport project with the purpose of producing an outright winner for ‘Group A' racing in Europe. It was first presented to the public at the Geneva Motor Show in March 1985, and was launched in July 1986.
The Sierra RS Cosworth was famous for looks as well as for performance. In the beginning, Ford's SVE (Special Vehicle Engineering) department worked with its long-time partner Cosworth to convert the rear-drive Sierra family saloon into a contender for FIA's World Touring Car Championship. Built according to the regulations of Group A, it needed to produce 5,000 cars for homologation. Apart from the obvious aerodynamic treatment and the usual suspension, brake, and tyre upgrades, the most significant change was the installation of Cosworth's YBB 1993cc turbocharged engine. Autocar recorded a 145mph top speed and 0-60mph in just 6.2 seconds, even though it was tested on a slightly damp track.
The RS Cosworth was also a lot faster than its key rivals, the BMW E30 M3 and the Mercedes 190E 2.3 16v. According to Autocar again, the M3 and 190E took 7.1 seconds and 8.0 seconds respectively to do 0-60. Interestingly, the BMW and Mercedes cost £23,500 and £25,500 respectively, while the Ford sold for just £16,200.
On the road the RS Cosworth was great to drive and used a smaller turbocharger with a milder boost pressure and relatively high compression ratio reduce turbo lag. The chassis provided plenty of traction and grip, thanks to the viscous-coupling LSD and the 20kg downforce generated by the rear wing. Despite its racy appearance, the Sierra RS Cosworth was actually very easy to live with. It was usually praised for agreeable ride, spacious cabin, supportive Recaro seats, and hatchback convenience. All these factors made it a dream performance car for ordinary people. A total of just 5,545 were manufactured, of which 500 were sent to Tickford for conversion to the Sierra RS500 Cosworth.
Equipment
Recaro sports seats, Sunroof, Electric windows, Electric mirrors, Cassette player, Sports steering wheel, Cigarette lighter, Ash tray, Split folding rear seats, Ford rubber mats, Digital clock, Glove compartment.
EXTERIOR
The jet-black paintwork and sizable rear wing create a menacing silhouette under our studio lighting. The glossy exterior remains to a great standard throughout, with only a few discreet blemishes worthy of note. In fact, the paintwork is so shiny that it reflects all of the imperfections on our studio walls. Undoubtedly this low mileage example presents very well indeed with absolutely no corrosion to the bodywork or underside.
On close inspection you'll notice how all the lenses retain a clear and crack-free appearance, with the bumpers and body kit devoid of any significant wear. Down both sides the panels are straight and line up correctly, with only a minor ding on the nearside front wing to mention.
INTERIOR
Coinciding with the car's minimal mileage, the interior is in true time-warp condition and shows almost no evidence of usage to the factory Recaro seats. The original cloth upholstery is in excellent order and remains free from any fading or sagging, with zero wear to the bolsters.
The remainder of the interior is equally pristine. All of the original features remain intact, with no modern ‘upgrades' whatsoever. There is no damage to any of the components and the rear parcel shelf is still in one piece, having never had aftermarket speakers fitted. The carpets are also in good order, with the front foot wells protected by a set of Ford rubber mats.
ENGINE & TRANSMISSION
The engine bay presents in remarkable condition, which is unsurprising given the car's limited usage. Featuring a DOHC 16-valve cylinder head, a Garrett T03 turbocharger, Weber-Marelli engine management system, and forged pistons, the two-litre Cosworth engine produces over 100hp per litre, which was a huge feat in the late 1980s.
On close inspection there are zero signs of any modifications, with the engine appearing fresh throughout and the original date stamps still present on the wings. Following a full inspection the car has been given a clean bill of health with absolutely no areas requiring attention.
WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES
Filling the arches of the Sierra are the original 15-inch cross-spoke alloys. Presenting as new, all wheels and centre caps have been treated to a professional refurbishment, and are finished to a very high standard indeed.
The alloys are shod in a matching set of Firestone Firehawk tyres, each with 7mm tread remaining. The brakes are also in fine condition with plenty of life left.
HISTORY FILE
First registered in Austria on 10th September 1986 this Sierra has covered just 16,626km, which equates to a mere 10,333 miles. Since that time the car has had just two keepers, with the last having owned the car for twenty years as part of his private collection.
The Sierra has recently been imported into the UK by 4 Star, and is present with the original Ford document pack. This is complete with all the original manuals to include the Austrian Type Certificate as well as the stamped service booklet. The service booklet is stamped up to the current mileage, and the car has also received an oil change every year since being in the collection.
