Description
Offered For Sale is a 1963 Chevrolet C2 Corvette Coupe (Split Window)
Inspired by the addition of Bill Mitchell in 1958 4 years of R&D were placed into the restyling of Chevrolets Corvette. Seeing as the chassis setup was very dated the entire platform was reengineered. This would be the first Corvette to offer 4 wheel independent suspension. It was introduced with several different horsepower ratings all of which were available in the 327 CID V-8 platform. It also allowed for true racing style with the Fuel injection setup as a high end option. The original intent of the fuel injection was to illuminate fuel slosh that was seen during tight cornering on the carbureted test models.
Better performance and power aside the restyling of the body is what makes the first generation of the C2 Corvette iconic. Bill Mitchell has openly admitted that he took much of the Corvettes stylings from art deco car influences. The most recognizable would be the fin and split window design seen in the Bugatti Atlantic. The rear of the car was designed after the Sting Ray racer which would see more of its design incorporated into the 1963 design with the hideaway headlamps.
In 1963 there were 10,594 coupes that were sold. This example is one of them. It has the 250 HP code RC engine which is numbers matching to the body. It is coupled with its original 4-speed transmission and original rear end.
The Interior has been well taken care of and is correct for the model. With the 837 base code it was originally outfitted with black vinyl. The dash and the gauges have all survived as well as the rest of the car and it is sporting its original mileage of 38,239 Miles. Original mileage has been verified through service records which are available as far back as 1985.
The paint is one of the more interesting features of the car. It has been verified that the car is wearing 80% of its original Riverside Red paint only seeing touchups to the rocker areas and the doors where the colour was blown in. This work was done in the late 80’s as is indicated by the service records.
The mechanical history of the car shows that the car has been well taken care of over the years. Even little details such as the heat shield overtop of the transmission was installed in 2002. This split window is tight in the steering and suspension as these items have been rebuilt as needed and well maintained for excellent drivability. The engine is smooth and quite when at idle and snarly and loud when performing. This is more than a show piece or automotive rarity it’s a real car that wants to be driven.
