Description

1963 Porsche 356B Cabriolet

This uniquely beautiful creation by Ferdinand Porsche is one of the most iconic and beloved classic car Cabriolets on earth. This exceptional Cabriolet is part of the Porsche 356’s most successful B series. As the logical successor to the A series, the car underwent various visual changes that were primarily motivated by the prevailing US safety standards of the time. Concurrently, the car was technologically modified, which noticeably improved its driving behavior. In the 1600S version, the car was given a 75hp engine, which, combined with the low vehicle weight, rendered the 356 a wonderfully smooth and very fast sports car. Pleasing to the eye, technologically advanced and highly reliable. Even today the attractiveness of a 356 is unparalleled among exotic sports car. The building methods at the time consisted of only painting each welded and tinned metal sheeting element and hence they more or less left the factory unprotected, which renders it exceedingly difficult to find a rust-free and well-restored 356 today. The model we offer here arrived in the Netherlands in 1988; in the early 1990s, Siemerink, a world-renowned restoration company, applied a zinc coating, whereby this Cabriolet remains in a beautiful and rust-free condition. For many years this 356 was parked in the corner of an old barn in Germany and therefore required comprehensive restoration. Under the expert guise of the first Dutch owner, who was also the best friend of the final German owner who gifted him the car, the restoration was done professionally and with great attention to detail. In fact, an extensive photo series and long article about this restoration project was published in ‘Automotive’ magazine in 1992. Rather extraordinary is the inclusion of the original German registration from 1963, precisely detailing the names of the previous German owners. We also know who the two Dutch owners were; hence, this car has a fully documented history, all of which is included in the comprehensive folder that comes with the car. This 356 B Cabriolet was restored down to the finest detail. Nothing was overlooked, the engine was overhauled, the brake system modernized into a separate circuit, the roof frame sanded and newly coated and even the filling was redone using the original horsehair material. Such an exceptionally fine and beautiful model rarely comes on market. This is a great opportunity for one searching for a stunning and superior-driving model with a fully documented history.
Delivered new in 963 to Messrs. Hahn Motorfahrzeuge GmbH, in Stuttgart, Germany. This dealer then sold the car as a Vorführ Car to Adolf Leikam, from Munich. This information, as well as that about the other owners, is compiled in the original ‘Kraftfahrzeugbrief’ that comes with the car. This 356 is also very well documented, including many photos of the restoration. The car originates from an active member of the Porsche 356 Club who is downsizing his collection due to a lack of leisure time and storage space. Delivered with new MOT and servicing.
