Description

1940 Bentley 4 1/4 Litre

SALE AGREED Chassis Nr B176MR A fabulous example of the desirable and sought after ‘M series’ Derby Bentley, very nicely bodied in the late 1990s, by Crailville, in the style of Vanden Plas. In 1998, the chassis was thoroughly re-furbished, including major attention to the engine, overhaul of rear axle, rebuilding of the road springs, radiator re-cored, chassis re-wired, etc, and much more besides, all documented with invoices in the file that accompanies the car. A newly built body by Crailville was fitted, panelled, excellently painted, upholstered, etc, and all work done to a very high standard, resulting in an excellent quality car, of very desirable specification, absolutely correct in appearance and a delight to behold. Eighteen years on, the car is still excellent, lovely to drive, ready to go and hard to fault in any way. Also included in the history file, as well as the aforementioned invoices, are the original logbook from 1940, together with two later continuation books, correct edition handbook, and various letters, etc. Complete with full wet weather gear, including side screens and tonneau cover and full hood, all very nicely made. The tools include the correct Dunlop jack, and a good selection of small spanners, etc, as shown in the photos. Just arrived from the Isle of Man, and very soon to be back on its original UK registration number, serviced and MoT tested, ready to go! Chassis No. B176MR Reg. No. FYO 550 £165,000. Snippets: Greville’s Patents On April Fool’s Day in 1940 B176MR was registered to Dr Ernest Richard Gordon Greville who during WWI had served with the RAMC on the frontline operating on the wounded. In the late 1800s his father Dr Ernest Greville had started the firm Medical Supply Association Ltd & after WWI his son (who could not adjust to peacetime surgery) joined his father in MSA Ltd - their combined medical knowledge ensured that even more medical designs appeared under the Grevillite banner – including the Grevillite Themometer, Guyot-Grevillite Operating Table (1910 Dr Greville Snr), Grevillite Vitrenamel, Grevillite Scale (for infants) & the Grevillite Portable Sterilizer. During WWII Dr Greville Jnr again served with the RAMC but retained B176MR for use as shown on the log book with the petrol ration stamps. The 2nd owner was B. A. Creswick of Bradford – the Creswick family owned the Farmer Giles Milk Bar company, one of the earliest Milk Bar companies in the UK they had shops in Bradford (head office)- where the “Teddy Boys” would later hang out & listen to the jukebox! Bristol, Nottingham, Coventry (site of a fire in 1939 in which a young girl died), Leeds, Leamington Spa (fined £1 in 1940 for not observing the black out) and Cardiff. From 1952 to 1965 B176MR was with the 2nd medical man, this being Dr Francis William Shepherd (1906/78) who spent WWII at Huddersfield as their Residential Surgical Officer, later to become a consultant in general surgery. When he owned B176MR Dr Shepherd lived at Dryclough House, Crosland Moor, Huddersfield which was built in the early 1800s, Dr Shepherd was raised on the Isle of Man and returned there for his retirement years; in 1965 (aged 59) he married a childhood sweetheart - Mrs Mary Hyde who died suddenly soon after they moved into their new Manx home. In 1965, the year of his wedding Dr Shepherd sold B176MR to Alfred W. M. Garrard of Weston Favell, Northamptonshire – he only kept B176MR for 1 month before he sold it.
