1933 Rolls-Royce

20/25 Hooper Sports Saloon
46,500.00 GBP

Description

1933 Rolls-Royce 20/25 Hooper Sports Saloon

Chassis No. GBA29

A delightful, compact sports saloon with sunroof, particularly light, sporty and attractive in appearance, in many ways reminiscent of the type of coachwork often associated with Phantom II Continentals, and looking like a smaller version of one of these. Contributing factors include sleek rear styling with peaked moulding around the number plate and a concealed luggage rack above it, louvred bonnet & scuttle, handsome wings, generally well-balanced lines and a full set of 'Ace' wheel discs. A pair of bumpers are supplied with the car - some prefer the looks with, some without. The car is sound in wind & limb, cosmetically - inside and out - just right to use and enjoy, smart, but not too smart, and mechanically good, running and driving nicely. Lots and lots of history accompanies the car, including invoices totalling over £60,000 for maintenance and repairs, early logbooks and tax discs, various correspondence and an owner's log running from 1946 until 2017! The car crossed the Atlantic on the maiden voyage of the QE2 in 1969 and participated in a club tour in the USA, and documents relating to this, photos of the car in Monte Carlo in 1962 and many more interesting papers, etc, are also in the file. Too many to show all of them here, but if you click the 'click here for more photos' link above, you will see some of them. Lovely car!

Snippets: Fascinating Neighbours

The 1st owner was Henry S Frost whose London residences included 103 Thurleigh Road, Balham and an apartment in Chesterfield House, Mayfair.  His neighbours at Chesterfield House (according to Webster’s Royal Red Book) included Count S. De Borchgrave, Air Marshall Sir John Salmond, Dame Elizabeth Cadbury (Chocolate), Siegmund Schapiro (Furs), Countess of Drogheda (pioneer aviator) and Mrs Y. L Embiricos (shipping).  In 1937 GBA29 was acquired by Alexander G. Tulloch who had the car registered to the family home of 82 Portland Place, London.  Again they are mentioned in Webster’s and their neighbours included several Rothschilds, Almina – Countess of Carnarvon, Lady Fripp & the Gainsboroughs.  From 1951 to 1952 John H. Gotch of Saffron Walden was the custodian of the car – his business profession was that of Cinema proprietor but in the early 1920s he was director of Motor Technical Records and he notes that then, there were only some 78 different makes of cars on the British roads! From 1954 to 2001 GBA29 was with one family, namely Captain Sydney John Savage Boord & his nephew-in-law Michael Francis Mostyn-Owen-Jodrell,  Captain Boord took GBA29 on extensive tours including travelling on the maiden voyage of QEII in 1969 alongside 28MS which is also with us!!  The Captain also travelled in Norway, Monte Carlo (took part in the Concours d’Elegance) and many within the UK.
