3½ Litre Hooper Sports Saloon B129BL62,500.00 GBP
说明
Sold by us in 1994, and now returned from the same owner, this car has been well cared-for over that 26 year period, which represents a sizeable chunk of the car's life so far! Work carried out has included complete re-paint in two shades of green, all bright work re-chromed, new leather upholstery, new headlining and carpets, interior wood very smartly re-finished to a high standard, and the car has been fully re-wired. Desirable touches include excellent quality stainless steel windscreen frame and fittings, typical of Hooper at the time, distinctively designed 'trade mark' door handles, a large sliding sunroof and particularly capacious boot. The car presents very well, is in good, sound condition, running nicely and driving well. History file with the car includes workshop manual, handbook, various correspondence, etc.

Julian Maynard Leonard (1907/78) was a scion of the Leonard family who can surely lay claim to being Petrol Pioneers as described in E. Liveing’s book about the family firm Carless, Capel & Leonard. The firm was started in 1859 by Eugene Carless as a refiner of oils with W Blagden joining him the following year. By 1870 they dissolved their partnership & Eugene found a new partner in George Capel with the new company become the leading distillery in the country with the American crude oils. By 1872 John Hare Leonard (1823/1895) bought Eugene out and renamed the company with Eugene becoming a works manager (his grandson J Carless joined the firm in 1908!) The Leonard family were established in Bristol & the family were involved in rope & twine, tobacco, iron merchants, paint manufacturing and Wagons – Albert Fry 1957/1938 (chocolate family) was a co-director of Bristol Wagon Works as was Julian’s Grand-Uncle - John Hare Leonard (1823/1895) and coincidentally we have Albert Fry’s Rolls-Royce 20hp GXL32 currently in stock at the same time as B129BL! With the advent of motorcars the firm started to produce Launch Spirit for cars with early customers including Evelyn Simms of the Daimler Motor Syndicate Ltd & C S Rolls. In 1893 they applied to trademark the word Petrol but it was refused on the grounds that it was a descriptive word and was not permitted! In 1916 William Leonard (brother of John Hare Leonard) was considering who could step into his shoes when he retired and his choice was his Grandnephew Julian Maynard Leonard who accepted the offer. Julian joined the company in 1917 and whilst learning the ropes managed to continue studying at London University. Julian’s main interest in the firm was in the construction, maintenance and development of the various works. By now the company was in the hands of the 3rd generation of Leonards and by the 1950s the 4th generation joined the company. In the 1950s B129BL was with Peter Luttman-Johnson whose father was born in Assam, India where his father was stationed in the Indian Civil service. In 1958 B129BL was owned by Peter Morrish whose address was that of Wagner House, St Edmunds School in Canterbury, he was not a teacher but a student & the school confirm that he would have been 18 years old at the time, so perhaps a birthday gift!!
